Senior frontend developer with 9+ years experience

CharlotteGieltjes

Creative front-end developer with an eye for detail and a passion for accessible digital experiences.

About

The Beginning

In 2005, I wrote my first line of CSS on Kindertent, a Dutch children's website, creating a core memory with a simple background: red. Over the years, I developed themes and plugins for platforms like Tumblr and WordPress. Following the principle of Maslow's Hammer, I scripted anything that could be automated, from bookmarklets to browser extensions to web, desktop, and mobile apps.

Current Career

My professional journey has taken me from small businesses to a large corporation and a customer experience agency. I've developed solutions for clients such as Nike, Fokker Services Group, AkzoNobel, Lely, DIF, AZ, Greenchoice, Daikin, FC Utrecht, FIFPro, Goede Doelen Loterijen, HG, Marel, Hertog Jan, Pameijer, Renault, Zelus, and many others. I progressed to a senior role, where I mentor interns, guide fellow developers, advise multidisciplinary teams and clients, and lead projects.

I have developed for new clients and projects and maintained a variety of existing projects, continuously improving my skills in frontend development. My growing interest in accessibility led me to become the representative developer at the Inclusive Design Lab. I prioritize writing DRY code, accessible semantic markup, and applying atomic web design principles. I develop reusable components, utilize CSS variables, and create scalable, flexible theming solutions. I have spent significant time creating and expanding codebase component libraries, including vanilla, headless Next.js, and barebone projects, as well as email campaigns and Salesforce templates.

Outside of Work

Consistency defines my professional journey, with over nine years at The Valley underscoring my dedication. However, I very much like variety in my personal life. I enjoy bringing a multitude of homemade treats to the office, occasional strength training, arts and crafts, learning new languages, and tackling logic puzzles. My social side comes out through weekend trips, meetups, and collaborating in board game groups and Dungeons & Dragons sessions.

You might also notice that I love Halloween 🎃
